Damaging winds slammed Auckland on Wednesday morning as a sub-tropical low moved in.
The strength of the winds even took forecasters by surprise as gales pushed into Auckland and Waikato.
Now the low is weakening but strong winds are in the forecast for central New Zealand on Wednesday, then conditions should start to ease for most places on Thursday.
Settled, sunnier and drier weather moves in for the weekend for most places.
