A short cold snap is pushing into the South Island Wednesday PM and across Thursday bringing some hail and heavy showers.
Those will be clearing by Friday, though as a large high rolls in from the west.
Philip Duncan has the details.

Anti-cyclonic SE – oh no they’re terrible SE brrr here, like an ice fan above ya. Hope we don’t get that bloody jump zone or low rotors with it. Oddly enough on 1 September 2012 that exactly same thing happened here. We had vicious rotors to very low level which made branches fly, and eventually so low down they scoured soil. The jump was diabolical. It was ahead of a southerly. Something about 1 Sept and anti-cyclones to the east. Funny how something so hideous to experience can be so picturesque.
