Here’s what is making the weather headlines this weekend.
MORE HEAT
Hot for many regions around New Zealand today, the eastern South Island once again gets the warmest temperatures however along the coastal fringe an east to northeast breeze may bring back temperatures a notch.
Sunday through to Tuesday next week is still quite warm in the east reaching into the late twenties, on Wednesday when a front moves through it cools down.
OUTLOOK CONTINUES TO BE DRY IN THE EAST
Northerly quarter winds continue to bring rain or showers into western regions for the next seven days ahead, much drier in the east and warm too. A large front brings very heavy rain to the West Coast on Sunday.
The precipitation percentage of normal map below shows wetter than average conditions (Blue) for the next seven days, you can see drier than average conditions too.
WEATHER ON SUNDAY
A strong front pushes over the South Island on Sunday reaching the North Island later in the day or overnight, as the front reaches the North Island it starts to weaken. Strong northerly winds ahead of the front with gales through Cook Strait.
North Island
A mix of sun and cloud with north to northeasterly winds, some high cloud starts to spread in from the Tasman afternoon on wards. Chance of a shower or two otherwise mainly dry, from evening some rain moves into western areas. Spits of rain overnight in the east.
South Island
Heavy rain for the West Coast, the odd shower for Nelson then turning to rain in the afternoon and becoming heavy, easing overnight. Marlborough has a dry morning then some rain starts spreading from the west mid to late afternoon. High cloud for Canterbury, a few spits of rain possible, high cloud breaks later in the day. A dry morning for Southland and Otago then rain develops in the afternoon, possibly heavy with thunder before easing later. From evening showers becoming unstable about South Westland with thunderstorms, spreading a little further north along the West Coast overnight. Gusty northerlies for most, winds tend more northwest later in the day.
