Here’s what is making the weather headlines this weekend.
We’ll update the snow maps mid-morning.
WEATHER ON SUNDAY
Expect showers or some rain for the western North Island, drier in the east although there will be a few morning showers south of Napier then clearing away.
Showers for the West Coast, dry in the east at first but expect rain for Southland and Otago spreading further north during the morning into early afternoon as southerlies freshen.
Snow lowers to low levels (100 to 200m) about the far south, 200 / 300m for Canterbury, 300 / 400m overnight for southern Marlborough. Snow overnight for the ranges of Wellington and Wairarapa lowers to 400 / 500m.
Showers clear overnight for Southland and Central Otago.
HIGH PRESSURE COVERS NZ NEXT WEEKEND
We may have some high pressure briefly move in over the South Island around Wednesday or Thursday next week but it’s not till next weekend that high pressure looks to cover all of New Zealand bringing settled frosty weather.

Hi Phil,
What are the chances of snowfalls on the Taieri Plains, Wingatui and Dunedin areas over the next couple of days? Looking at rural weather it looks wet instead.
Cheers, Jenny.

Hi Jenny, there is some chance on Sunday but mostly higher up on the hills rather than the Plains. It’s a borderline event for coastal areas and below 100m. We’ll have a snow map up a little later this afternoon for the next 24 hours ahead, and hopefully more details tomorrow. Inland areas above 50 to 100m have a chance of snow and those 100 to 250m a higher chance of it settling. The icons on RuralWeather usually shows snow icons when heavier snow is in the forecast.
Cheers
Philip
