Here’s what is making the weather headlines today.
AFTERNOON SHOWERS INNER NORTH ISLAND
Isolated afternoon showers develop for inland parts of the North Island today, some of those showers may become heavy with thunder then clearing later on. This is the result of converging winds at the surface, good surface moisture and some slight cooling aloft.
Check out Metservice’s thunderstorms outlook here for more.
RAIN MOVES INTO NORTHLAND TOMORROW
A low moving in towards the upper North Island from the tropics brings rain to Northland tomorrow, the exact timing this rain will move in is up for debate but could be from afternoon or evening, generally into the second half of the day.
Rain hangs around the North Island on Friday and into the weekend, heavy falls are looking likely especially in areas exposed to the east, so eastern Northland through to Bay Of Plenty and East Cape and then down into Hawkes Bay.
Below is the precipitation percentage of normal map which runs through to the 1st February, the blue colouring indicates the higher than average expected rainfall for northeastern parts of the North Island coming up.
A few watches will likely appear soon from Metservice which you can see here.
ENE WINDS TO PICK UP
Apart from the rain mentioned above, winds will also pick up for the upper North Island on Friday and continue to be a little gusty on Saturday. Winds on Saturday shift south a bit and southeasterlies strengthen through Cook Strait, about the outer Marlborough Sounds winds may actually rise or gust to gale force.
Winds don’t look like they will rise to gale for the upper North Island but may be strong at times. A good old fashioned blustery couple of days.
