> From the WeatherWatch archives

Here’s what is making the weather headlines today.

SNOW FOR CANTERBURY to 500 / 400M

A cold front moves northwards to lie over the upper South Island today, Canterbury will see some rain with snow possibly as low as 400m in the south then lifting to about 700m for northern North Canterbury. Precipitation will start to clear in the south from this afternoon then finally clearing North Canterbury tonight. For warnings from Metservice on today’s snow please see this page here.

Map below showing potential snow accumulations from the cold front today.

HEAVY RAIN POSSIBLE FOR NELSON TODAY

Rain for Nelson may be heavy at times from around midday then easing later this evening. Up to 25mm is possible but twice this amount could fall in the ranges.

NORTHERN LOW TONED DOWN FOR WEDNESDAY

A low is still due to brush the northeastern side of the North Island on Wednesday, moving away to the southeast during the day. While rain could still be heavy about eastern Northland in the morning, Coromandel afternoon and East Cape later in the day the chance of this has toned down a bit. The low appears to be moving through a touch more to the northeast keeping the heaviest rain just offshore. Still, something to keep an eye on and we’ll have to see how the situation unfolds.

Southerly quarter winds for the upper North Island are also not looking as strong as they were in yesterday’s model runs. Winds from the south or southwest freshen in the evening and may be strong about western coastal areas Auckland northwards overnight.
