Here’s what is making the weather headlines today.
MAINLY SETTLED AND WARM TODAY
A ridge of high pressure brings mainly settled weather today, warm also with some regions getting into the mid, perhaps even late twenties.
Fiordland has a few showers though and northeastern parts of the North Island have a few showers (East Cape through to Northland), one or two of these showers for the North Island could become heavy about inland areas then easing later on.
MORE INSTABILITY ON THE WAY
We have had a few thunderstorms lately thanks to some cold upper air and humid warm surface conditions, and some more of this is on the way.
The North Island on Wednesday and Thursday has heavy afternoon showers develop for inland areas with thunderstorms possible then easing at night. The South Island has a risk too but not as great as further north, perhaps Central Otago on Wednesday afternoon then inland parts of the upper South Island on Thursday afternoon.
Late Friday for the upper North Island then into Saturday further risks of thunderstorms present themselves, more on that as the week moves along.
The below maps show the lifted index for Wednesday and Thursday afternoons at 4:00pm, a lifted index below 0 means conditions are becoming unstable.
CANTERBURY LOOKING DRY
Conditions in Canterbury and Marlborough are a bit dry at the moment, there has been periods of convective showers moving through and this is welcome but a little more could help. Central Otago while a bit dry also, conditions are actually average there right now in terms of soil moisture.
So, Canterbury needs some moisture, and thankfully some is on the way. Later in the afternoon’s on Wednesday and Thursday isolated convective showers may develop for inland areas again, while this is helpful these types of showers don’t tend to be very long lasting or widespread. Sometimes convective showers can spread out and turn into something a bit more decent but Wednesday and Thursday don’t appear to be those types of days.
Friday and Saturday however look like days some slightly more widespread / consistent rain moves in, a warm front on Friday then an occluded front sweeping in on Saturday.
