Weather headlines (x3) for Tuesday: Calm before the storm, Eastern showers on Thursday, High on Fri / Sat

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Here’s what is making the weather headlines today.

CALM BEFORE THE STORM

The weather around much of New Zealand is relatively calm today compared to what is about to move in, Canterbury and many North Island regions Waikato southwards should experience a mainly sunny day with highs in the late teens.

But yes a cold outbreak is one the way and it starts for Southland around midday reaching up into Canterbury this evening. Snow lowers to between 400 and 300m overnight for the far south, snow starting to move into the ranges of Canterbury overnight also. Wednesday the snow level drops more, getting to sea level in the afternoon about the far south and then Canterbury has a shot at sea level snow from evening. Southwesterlies strengthen into the second half of Wednesday with coastal gales likely for the South Island and perhaps the western North Island. Wind chill factors will be high so farmers take note.

Philip Duncan will no doubt provide a thorough update on snow potential soon so keep an eye out for any forthcoming stories and video’s from him today.

Metservice have plenty of watches out regarding this event, please check them out here.

CHAIN SHOWERS IN THE EAST ON THURSDAY

Showers mostly push into the far south then up the eastern coastal fringes of both Islands on Thursday, showers for the western North Island clear away during the afternoon as a southerly airflow pushes through.

Snow flurries for the eastern South Island are still possible to near sea level in the morning or perhaps sea level itself then gradually lifting during the day, as far as Canterbury is concerned Thursday is very much a coastal event, inland areas will not see showers. The eastern North Island sees flurries to 300m, perhaps even as low as 200m about the hills of Wellington and Wairarapa.
