Weather headlines (x3) for Thursday: Thundery weather continues, Xmas Day outlook, Rain to return end of the year?

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Here’s what is making the weather headlines today.

THUNDERY WEATHER CONTINUES

We are still stuck in this unstable pattern thanks to some relatively cool upper air lying over the country, warm humid conditions at the surface plus converging winds. The cold upper air starts to ease on Christmas Day and really moves away by boxing day, that’s when all this afternoon shower business starts to end.

Until then, enjoy the big clouds if you can. More on today’s thunderstorms outlook from Metservice here.

CHRISTMAS DAY STILL LOOKING MAINLY SETTLED

A large high sitting over the country on Christmas Day brings mainly settled weather, as mentioned above there is still some cool upper air so a few afternoon shower may still pop up but they don’t look to be very widespread, mainly east of the main divide about inland hills and ranges.

There is some cloud at the northern end and southern end of the country thanks to a few systems on either side of our large high, but no real issues there.

RAIN RETURNS END OF THE YEAR

While 8 or 9 days away is a bit far out in the weather world we can start to look at some long range maps to see what could possibly arrive over us about then. We’ll let the maps do the talking and get into more detail as we approach new years eve and day.
