Here’s what is making the weather headlines today.
SNOW IN THE FAR SOUTH AND BANKS PENINSULA
As far as the South Island is concerned that’s where most of today’s snow will fall, from midday the snow level will lift to above 400m. Christchurch is on the knife edge, to be honest perhaps a bit far west of that knife all together so a few in the east have seen some snow while most not a flurry to be seen. This is due to the southwest airflow and the direction the wind is coming in at into Canterbury, if the flow is more to the west of southwest showers chug along offshore more, if the flow was more to the south of southwest they would come inland a bit more. Sometimes though you never really know exactly how that will play out until the situation unfolds so always a little tricky.
The ranges of the lower / eastern North Island would see some snow also, mostly above 300 to 400m but flurries may fall lower this morning for the ranges of Wellington and Wairarapa.
FROSTS TO COME
Yes frosts will develop overnight for many in the South and North Island’s tonight but some for the inner South Island are already well below freezing this morning. A frost risk continues again this weekend but as the day’s move along the risk retreats further inland and becomes less prevalent near the coast.
More on frost potential here.
DAY TIME TEMPERATURES TO BOUNCH BACK OVER THE WEEKEND
As the weekend moves along and warmer air starts to move in naturally day time temperatures will start to bounce back, especially for the North Island on Saturday then the South Island on Sunday, more so as far as eastern regions are concerned.
