Here’s what is making the weather headlines today.
COOLER IN THE EAST – SOUTH ISLAND
It’s been hot for the eastern South Island lately, finally some relief today with temperatures likely to be in the mid to late teens. In addition Canterbury has a few showers.
Temperatures will pick up again a little tomorrow but for the next 7 or so days temperatures will not reach the low to mid thirties.
RATHER UNEVENTFUL FRIDAY AND SATURDAY
A high pressure system sits over the country on Friday, some rain or showers for the eastern North Island, not to bad elsewhere. On Saturday expect showers for the eastern and upper North Island in an east to northeasterly airflow, the South Island has some good weather but there may be some cloud in the east.
Perhaps a good time to prepare for North Islanders, tropical cyclone Gabrielle is beckoning.
TROPICAL CYCLONE GABRIELLE EARLY NEXT WEEK
Below is the current track GFS is taking tropical cyclone Gabrielle as it moves over the North Island early next week. No doubt Philip Duncan will have an updated in depth look at the current details regarding this system this morning so check back here on weatherwatch.co.nz soon.
The short summary is there is potentially going to be some very heavy rain in store for the upper and eastern North Island. Very strong winds are likely around this storm also, from the southeast then eventually tending southwest as the storm moves away to the east, winds also very strong from the northeast for parts of the upper North Island on Tuesday 14th for a time.
Large swells will also be of concern.
This map below shows where the heaviest rain is likely, where the blue colouring is the darkest shade. Auckland northwards, Coromandel, eastern Bay Of Plenty, East Cape, Gisborne and Hawkes Bay.
