> From the WeatherWatch archives

Here’s what is making the weather headlines today.

MORE THUNDERSTORMS

The unsettled weather continues with more thunderstorms and hail for western regions today, for the West Coast this is mainly north of about Greymouth.

The lower and eastern South Island may not miss out either, Canterbury’s risk develops this afternoon as a southerly change moves through.

STRONG WESTERLIES – NORTH ISLAND

Strong westerly quarter winds lie over the North Island today, also through Cook Strait. Overnight is when the strongest winds move through as westerlies tend a little more southwest, naturally western coastal areas will pick up the fastest wind speeds.

The southeastern corner of the South Island gets strong southwesterlies today also.

WEATHER EASES ON FRIDAY

The unsettled weather backs off on Friday, we still have a few showers about in a southwesterly airflow but generally better.

The only sub heading to this is some lower parts of the North Island may experience a few remaining heavy showers with thunder and hail in the morning but these will ease.

The next round of unsettled weather is a low moving out of the Tasman Sea this weekend, this brings thunderstorms and hail to the North Island on Sunday.
