Weather headlines (x3) for this weekend: Welcome rain has moved in, Instability this afternoon, Weather on Sunday

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Here’s what is making the weather headlines today.

CANTERBURY SEEING SOME NICE RAIN

Farmers and others alike wishing to see some reasonable rain have had some relief today with good rain moving into the region last night.

30 – 50mm has fallen in various parts across Canterbury with totals as high as 60 – 70mm in some spots, mainly further inland. Some would have seen lesser amounts generally closer to the coast but any rain is welcome.

The rain hasn’t finished yet either but will gradually ease across this afternoon, perhaps not easing though about some inland spots and South Canterbury especially till this evening.

Apart from Canterbury the Nelson and Marlborough regions would have seen some rain too, this should be followed up by areas of rain again tomorrow which will be welcome considering the dry ground there.

The below image is a modelled accumulative rainfall map through to tomorrow so may not be accurate but gives a representation of where the most rain has fallen.

INSTABILITY THIS AFTERNOON

Conditions will likely become unstable this afternoon for the North Island and parts of the upper South Island especially inland. For more details on today’s thunderstorm outlook check out Metservice’s risk profile here.

Tomorrow has another chance of unstable conditions with a higher chance of storms occurring.

WEATHER ON SUNDAY

Low pressure brings unstable conditions to most of New Zealand on Sunday thanks to cool air aloft and humid surface conditions.

North Island

Partly cloudy with showers in the west, showers becoming heavy in the afternoon with isolated thunderstorms then easing at night. Heavy showers may spring up in the afternoon for Wairarapa also but Hawkes Bay and Gisborne look to stay mainly dry. Winds from the north or northwest, perhaps coming in from the northeast for eastern coastal areas (Gisborne through to Wairarapa).

SOUTH ISLAND

Partly cloudy skies for most but the lower South Island sees cloudy skies in the morning then breaking a little, a few light showers along the West Coast, about coastal Otago and up around Nelson and Marlborough. Some rain starts to move into Nelson and Marlborough during the morning though and then in the afternoon isolated showers start spinning up for inland areas. Showers may become heavy in spots with a chance of thunderstorms then easing / clearing at night. Overnight a few showers continue along the West Coast. Winds tend to the north along the West Coast and about Nelson / Marlborough, winds a little more onshore in the south and east.
