Here’s what is making the weather headlines today.
TEMPERATURES WARMING UP ON SUNDAY
As a ridge slips over the country today temperatures are still a little cool beyond the upper North Island, on Sunday we see warmer highs especially for the eastern South Island and much of the North Island as a westerly quarter airflow develops and temperatures in the upper atmosphere warm.
A BIT COOL FOR INLAND AREAS THIS MORNING
Thanks to high pressure pushing in and clear’ish skies this morning about the far south temperatures are pretty cool this morning, while a frost isn’t likely considering the time of year a light one is possible.
WEATHER ON SUNDAY
A westerly quarter airflow lies over New Zealand spinning out of a high in the Tasman Sea, a front also moves onto the far south.
North Island
A mix of sun and cloud for western regions, west to northwesterly winds south of Taranaki, southwesterly breezes further north. There may be a shower or two in the morning for northeastern parts (East Cape through to Northland) then clearing. Bay Of Plenty and the east coast have a mostly sunny day after any morning cloud clears, light winds tend onshore in the afternoon.
South Island
Mostly cloudy for the West Coast but sunny spells break through in the afternoon, winds from the southwest, rain for Fiordland from morning, easing later in the day. Nelson and Marlborough have a sunny day with northerlies. Sun possible in the morning about the far south then cloud thickens, rain moves into Southland during the afternoon with the chance of a shower for Otago (mainly about the coast). Canterbury has sun and high cloud, light winds tend onshore near the coast in the afternoon, cloud starts to thicken in the evening especially south of Banks Peninsula with the risk of a light shower or drizzle patch.
