Frosts possible in the south +NZ’s Sunday forecast

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Here’s what is making the weather headlines this weekend.

SOME SNOW ABOUT THE FAR SOUTH, CHANCE OF A FROST SUNDAY MORNING?

Some cold upper air moves over the lower South Island later today into overnight, some snow may fall to 700m this evening / overnight for the ranges of Southland and perhaps Otago.

With the cold air and if skies are clear enough by Sunday morning about the far south there could even be a light frost, it’s not overly likely but at the minimum it will certainly feel a bit cold.

WEATHER ON SUNDAY

A low pressure system crosses over the North Island with southwesterlies following in behind as the low moves out to the east.

North Island

Conditions may be dry about the upper North Island this morning then showers develop around midday, some may become heavy in the afternoon with thunder, easing in the evening as northerlies change southwest. Rain develops in the southwest during the morning (Taranaki through to Wairarapa), chance of the odd heavy fall, easing this evening as southwesterlies freshen. Hawkes Bay and Gisborne are dry with high cloud then late afternoon or evening some rain moves in as southwesterlies spread northwards.

South Island

Rain or showers for the upper South Island (Canterbury / Hokitika northwards), winds are generally light, rain easing during the afternoon from the south then clearing away in the evening with only the odd shower remaining for Nelson and Marlborough overnight. The lower South Island has partly cloudy skies with cloud breaking away in the evening, coastal Southland may see one or two light showers in the morning then clearing. Winds are light coming in from the south.
