Weather headlines: Snow to sea level this coming week for the South Island.

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Here’s what is making the weather headlines this weekend.

COLD SOUTHWEST BLAST NEXT WEEK

Into the second half of Tuesday this coming week a cold strong southwest airflow develops for the South Island, reaching the North Island on Wednesday.

Winds look to be strong with this system with gales likely for a number of coastal areas. Second thing to note is air eventually looks to get very cold with snow looking possible for the South Island to low levels or possibly even near sea level in the south and east.

Wind chill will also be significant (see it hourly at RuralWeather.co.nz – click the Temperatures tab at the top).

The North Island’s ranges in the south and east look like getting snow too, it won’t be as low as the South Island but still getting to about 400 or 300m – and potentially an isolated flurry or two even lower.

Some potentially very frosty weather coming up after the windy southwesterlies move out of the way later in the week.
