Here’s what is making the weather headlines this weekend.
BIG LOW TO THE NORTHEAST
A big deep low to the northeast of the North Island passes away to the southeast today and tomorrow, while it looks fairly ominous it shouldn’t affect our weather in an inclement way. The eastern North Island has a few light showers, mainly dry out west with sun and some high cloud. Coastal areas exposed to the east should start to see a reasonable easterly swell.
GUSTY EASTERLY QUARTER WINDS IN THE EAST – SOUTH ISLAND
Coastal Canterbury through to coastal Otago has fresh to strong east to northeasterly winds today, especially this afternoon. Winds start to ease from this evening.
Below is a wind graph for Christchurch, we can see winds are 30 km/h at 4:00pm gusting up to 46 km/h.
WEATHER ON SUNDAY
The North Island is mostly sunny, perhaps a few clouds in the west. Mahia Peninsula and Gisborne has some cloud and a few showers which clear away during the afternoon. Winds from the southwest in the west, southerlies for the east coast.
A front pushes onto the South Island from the west bringing rain to Fiordland in the morning, easing afternoon, cloud and a few light showers may push a little further northwards along the coast. Mostly sunny for Nelson and Marlborough with light winds tending onshore in the afternoon. Southland through to Canterbury is dry with some developing cloud, in the afternoon however a few isolated showers develop, mainly for inland areas away from the coast then clearing later in the evening.
