> From the WeatherWatch archives

Here’s what is making the weather headlines today.

WARNINGS A PLENTY – EX TC GABRIELLE MOVES IN

Ex tropical cyclone Gabrielle moves in to the North Island today with its centre lying just north of Auckland this evening, there could be some subtle changes as to the exact placement here but overall this is looking to be a significant event with plenty of heavy rain and very strong winds in store.

Please keep up to date with today’s watches and warnings from Metservice here.

OVERALL PICTURE OF WHERE THE HEAVIEST RAIN WILL FALL

We bring out the old “Precipitation percentage of normal” map again this morning, this shows where rain over the next 7 days is going to be higher or lower than the statistical average for this time of year. Blue is higher, the darker the colour the more rain is expected, red is lower than expected rainfall and conversely the darker the colour the reverse is true.

We can see that most of the North Island is expecting higher than average rainfall this week, most of it attributed to the next couple of days. The east coast and areas exposed to the northeast look to get the most rain.

Coromandel, just north of Auckland into Northland and then Hawkes Bay look to get the heaviest or most persistent falls.

Rain pushes down the South Island’s east coast from Tuesday and there may be some heavy rain on the way, it’s quite dry for the east coast there at the moment so this is welcome but then we don’t want too much rain as that can be problematic also.

STRONG WINDS HANG AROUND A WHILE

The maps below show the winds coming up this week. Very strong winds for the North Island today, coming in from the southeast then changing to the southwest on Tuesday as the low moves eastwards, winds then ease as we get into Thursday.

For the South Island’s east coast we have a sustained period of coastal southwesterly gales running from Wednesday through to Friday.

Finally on Saturday winds start to ease as a high pressure system moves in over the South Island, this spreads to the North Island on Sunday.
