Here’s what is making the weather headlines today.
HIGH PRESSURE BRINGS SOME SETTLED WEATHER
A high covering New Zealand brings mainly settled weather across the country today, however as always there are a few gremlins in the mix.
Some instability this afternoon about the ranges of East Cape, Gisborne and perhaps northern Hawkes Bay may bring isolated heavy showers with some thunder. Inland parts of the South Island also have the risk of a few isolated showers this afternoon, perhaps some thunder too, more so for inland Southland / Otago but some could occur a bit further north also.
For more on today’s thunderstorm risk, check out today’s charts from Metservice here.
And there may be a touch of fog or mist for some this morning but it shouldn’t last long. Generally beyond the above it should be a fairly good day overall.
WARM IN THE NORTH
It’s warm for the North Island today with temperatures reaching into the mid twenties for many especially north of Taranaki / Lake Taupo about inland spots.
Some inland parts of the South Island see warm temperatures also, perhaps not as warm as the North Island but still in the low to mid twenties, this can be seen in the map below.
Tuesday and Wednesday are warm too, Tuesday sees conditions become quite humid again for the North Island with heavy afternoon downpours and thunderstorms for some.
RAINFALL OUTLOOK – NEXT SEVEN DAYS
The next seven days looks to see mostly average rainfall around New Zealand, perhaps one or two spots in the east may be a touch below average, not to bad though.

The precipitation percentage of normal map below shows above average rainfall in blue, average rainfall is white and below average rainfall is red.
