Here’s what is making the weather headlines today…
HEAVY RAIN TODAY – NORTH ISLAND
Hawkes Bay, Gisborne and some parts of the upper North Island look to be in for some heavy rain today.
Auckland, Coromandel, Waikato and western Bay Of Plenty sees areas of heavy rain develop later this morning or around midday. Thunderstorms are possible too then easing later this evening or overnight.
Later this afternoon or evening heavy rain moves into Gisborne and Hawkes Bay.
Please take a look at today’s warnings from Metservice here and today’s thunderstorm outlook here.
On Saturday heavy rain pushes south down the east coast of the North Island arriving in Wellington during the evening, perhaps getting into Marlborough later in the day or overnight.
NICE WEATHER IN THE FAR SOUTH AND WEST COAST
Here is a cloud cover map for New Zealand today, as you can see the West Coast and far south are mainly sunny. The places to be you could say……
RAINFALL OUTLOOK – NEXT SEVEN DAYS
A fair majority of the South Island is expecting rainfall that is less than the statistical average for the next seven days, about Fiordland and in the northeast (Kaikoura / Marlborough) rainfall is expected to be average or a touch above average.
The North Island is wetter, mainly thanks to the rain we are going to see over the next three days. The far north though may be drier than average.

Thinking back to last week (or even the beginning of this week) I don’t recall the forecast being quite as bad as it has ramped up to be. Especially in Auckland / Coromandel. Do you think we should expect very heavy rain whenever we see rain the forecast? It’s very hard to truly believe it when it says only 1mm here or there.

That’s because these are localised downpours/thunderstorms – you can’t really be specific about them until the day other than saying a general risk the day or two before maybe. Same as Jan 27th. Once they develop we can then be very specific.
Today there were flash flood warnings out this morning by MetService and all that information was on our website and at 2:30pm we warned the city could get 2 months’ rainfall today only.
With forecasting you can pick rain / lows several days out, you can pick general rainfall. But heavy unstable downpours that rapidly develop in the afternoon aren’t usually forecast in detail until hours in advance – sometimes as it is developing. That’s the nature of instability and severe thunderstorms. This is the case in every country on earth. That’s why if rain matters to you, you should be checking thunderstorm outlooks daily, watching weather videos, studying the rain maps and knowing when the risks are increased.
Cheers
