Weather Headlines for Wednesday – A few isolated heavy showers, rain for Canterbury

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Thunderstorms possible

Conditions may become unstable again this afternoon anywhere from Northland through to Waikato and inland Bay Of Plenty bringing a possibility of thunderstorms. Thunderstorms by nature tend to be isolated so rainfall won’t be consistent everywhere but if you do strike one you could get a downpour. There’s also some heavy rain clearing northeastern parts of the North Island first thing this morning, this rain would have moved through Bay Of Plenty last night bringing heavy rain there.

Map shows: Convective Available Potential Energy (J/kg) and Surface Lifted Index (°K).

Rain for Canterbury

A southwest change pushes up the east coast of the South Island today, Canterbury should see some rain this evening with 10 to 15mm fairly probable for most.

A period of settled weather coming up then maybe rain early February

From Friday conditions will be fairly settled with an anticyclone hanging around for a while but early February there are signs of some rain. More details here.
