Weather Headlines for Friday (x3): Heavy rain, High humidity & incoming cool change (for some)

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Here are the 3 main weather headlines making news for today, Friday Feb 4th.

HEAVY RAIN STILL THE FOCUS FOR THE SOUTH ISLAND WEST & NORTH

The focus is still on the South Island especially the West Coast today and Nelson/Marlborough as far as heavy rain is concerned, inland Canterbury may get some heavy rain from this afternoon for a time then Nelson and Tasman will be the focus on Saturday.

Wet weather moves to the North Island on Sunday, more by clicking this link here.

Going by the precipitation percentage of normal map below which is from today through to next Friday we can see northwestern parts of the South Island get the heaviest rain which will be today and tomorrow. Rain does move to the North Island on Sunday with the heaviest rain likely in the southwest and east generally speaking.

Departure from normal rainfall for the next 7 days ahead.
Areas in blue are wetter than average, white = normal rainfall for this time of year and red/pink indicates drier than usual.

HIGH HUMIDITY CONTINUES FOR THE UPPER NORTH ISLAND

The upper North Island will continue to see high humidity from now and through all of next week. At this link here (which is for Auckland) click on the “Fog/Cloud” tab, find the dew point temperature (green line). Anything above 15C is getting muggy, a 20 degree dew point is quite humid.

Basically for the next 10 days out the dewpoint doesn’t drop below about 17 or 18 degrees, it reaches 21 or 22 on Sunday which is very humid.

But as the north warms up, the south cools down.

Dunedin has a MAX temp on Friday of around 11 or 12C.
Auckland has a MIN temp tonight of around 21 or 22C.

IF THE WEATHER IS BAD FOR MOST REGIONS, FIORDLAND IS OFTEN THE DRIEST

As a rule of thumb, if the weather is bad for most regions around New Zealand and you are looking to go somewhere dry with sun then head to Fiordland. Rain or showers clears Fiordland on Saturday then there is 3 or 4 days of good weather there. The map below is for this coming Sunday at 4pm in the afternoon.
