Former tropical cyclone Lusi is now in the Tasman Sea after a close shave with Northland and Auckland on Saturday.
The storm is moving in towards the South Island’s West Coast and will likely make landfall this evening between Hokitika and Greymouth.
Greymouth may have severe gales for a time too, as the centre of the storm moves in from the north.
Rain is pushing into many parts of the South Island.
Lusi is no longer a cyclone and continues to weaken.

It seems to be heading towards the West Coast of the South Island. Once it reaches the land, it’s bound to lose its grunt due to the lack of water to propel it.
