Warm up north but chilly in south

Mainlanders in eastern and southern areas have had to add an extra layer of clothing today as a cool and moist southerly winds its way north.

Kaikoura is just 12 degrees at midday with the wind guage recording a stong and gusty southerly near 80kph and some heavy showers moving through.

It’s not much warmer in Christchurch with  a showery southerly and a mere 13 degrees which is down 15-20 degrees on recent days.

Nelson and the West Coast are enjoying temperatures in the 20s. Wellington is feeling the cooler winds but further north the southerly hasn’t arrived yet with many northern centres in the 20s.

Gisborne and Napier are in the high 20s but a southerly later should see the mercury dive.

At midday the main centres were…

Auckland 23

Hamilton 22

Wellington 17

Christchurch 13

Dunedin 15
