VIDEO: Westerlies, frosts, showers and sunshine – NZ’s weather to Monday

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Unsettled weather continues on around NZ this week however high pressure is also expanding and that means frosty weather will return.

Tonight looks colder with frosts returning but Thursday night/Friday morning sees a brief warm up – ahead of the next colder change for Friday night.

High pressure moves through NZ this weekend encouraging westerlies in the south of the country and some West Coast rain returning by Sunday or Monday.

It’s often very hard to make out NZ under all the idibars etc. Is there some way to make it stand out more?

WW Forecast Team on 19/08/2021 12:15am

Hi Jan, unfortunately we cannot change the maps we use as they are created by another organisation. In saying that, our videos are all about the ‘big picture’ rather than localised regional updates (our hyper-local forecasts can give you that detailed hourly local/regional information you need) – so as long as you can generally see where NZ is then thats what matters most. If you can’t see NZ because there are too many isobars that alone tells you it will be windier. The maps we use actually are great because they also highlight just how small NZ is when compared to the weather makers that surround us. We hope to improve the maps in the future but that may not be until some time next year.
Kind regards
Philip Duncan

when will see milder spring type sunshine

WW Forecast Team on 18/08/2021 1:10am

Usually by late August northern NZ starts getting milder injections (still cold snaps through until November though). The rest of NZ usually sees improvements into mid Spring. Cold blasts can come into NZ up until summer though (and even through summer).
