We have latest rainfall totals which suggest 500 to 800mm is quite possible over the next five days in the north west corner of the South Island, maybe more.
These are significant totals and will likely lead to slips and flooding.
Gusty N to NE winds will also develop over the coming days in northern NZ with gusts to gale force and some heavy rain there too.
This weekend this wet set up moves through but then a showery westerly and southerly may also be in the mix.
In Australia not much is happening but a westerly change is moving in for the southern coastline and that turns colder southerly this weekend.

Thanks Philip for your thorough forecast. Living in Nelson we laugh at wintery southerlies because of our mountain shelter but this event looks likely to hit us hard in the middle of lambing . Thanks for the detail. We have moved as many sheep as possible to safer paddocks for tomorrow.

Hi Peter, thanks very much for the update and totally hear you re: wintry southerlies in Nelson!! Really glad to hear you’ve been able to move sheep to paddocks that are safer. It’s always hard to know which particular catchment will take the brunt of the rain in an event like this – but really anywhere west of Mapua is at risk from the most serious slips/flooding and inundation of low lying areas. We expect damage to fences, bridges and roads in the area too. All the very best farming in this tough set up next few days – at least the temperatures will be kind to you.
Cheers
Phil D
