I’ve been in an ten foot open dinghy in 35 knot winds (63 kph) with waves that were higher than the boat: the rudder was broken and that was an interesting experience.
This video shows how bouyancy, watertightness, good design, and keeping the bow into the wind has a lot to do with survival. If the the ship had lost power it would have lost steering, then broached (turned side-on to the waves and wind) then capsized:
