High pressure fades this weekend and by next week a large low looms over New Zealand bringing rain to the western half of NZ and a drier, milder, set-up for many in the east.
Despite the low being large, it’s not looking especially stormy – and that may be due to a lot of high pressure surrounding it. Australia has a lot of high pressure but airflows over the coming week will bring rain and showers into the southern coastal side of the nation and also into Sydney next week.
We have your NZ and Australia forecast for the weekend and through to Wednesday next week.

In the next seven days, no Chch won’t.
Beyond that we’ll have to see but naturally as we get into spring chances will start to decrease and they aren’t terribly high to begin with.

Hi Phil:
As you know the models have forecast the high pressure system cutting off the low to the south on Monday. Given its still three days out, what’s the chance it won’t get cut off, and we continue to get a cold feed of air from the south?
Cheers,
Michael

Hi Michael, in winter anything can suddenly change but the modelling is currently also backed up by our forecast data which suggests temperatures in southern NZ (Otago and Southland) will lift up a few degrees by the end of next week – a sign that west to north west winds may be returning. Keep an eye on the morning forecast updates each day which capture the latest modelling from overnight/early morning.
Cheers
Phil
