Cyclone Gabrielle was upgraded to a severe Category 3 cyclone overnight but will weaken a little before it reaches New Zealand.
The storm is going to go through a big transition as it leaves the tropics and turns extra-tropical. This shifts the severe weather further out from the centre of the storm and makes the low lop-sided (with the bulk of the severe weather in the southern half of the storm).
This weekend we’ll have extra updates, with a video later on Saturday and another one on Sunday.

What is happening with the high over NZ at them moment? Won’t that block the cyclone and send it east?

I think the high currently sitting to the east of NZ is largely responsible for the cyclones trajectory — it’s thought that it will block the cyclone from continuing east, instead causing it to head southeast into NZ. Weatherwatch to correct me if I’m wrong!

Thank you. It’s a bit of a worry that’s for sure.

This is a great site. The map looks so horrific. It’s 2am here in Denver Co and communicating with friend Renee in Auckland. Hope that move to the East happens.
Take care everyone.
