When it became evident that Tropical Cyclone Pam would hit Vanuatu on Friday, it didn’t take long for aid agencies to mobilise – setting up shelters, medical centres and water filtering stations and offering advice to those in need.
Evacuation centres are now crowded in Port Vila and there are grave concerns for the safety of people in Vanuatu’s outer islands, while power and water supplies are severely disrupted across the country.
Most of these agencies exist, at least partly, on donations – and couldn’t survive without the support of generous people around the world.
While they aren’t the only organisations providing assistance to the Vanuatu relief effort, both the Red Cross and UNICEF have been tireless in their work both before, during and after the cyclone hit. If you would like to assist financially or in any other way, their details are below.
