USA: Flooding affects millions, over half a metre of rain falls

The remnants of Tropical Storm Nicole could become an historic storm for the East Coast. Millions of people are in the path of the storm, and major flash flooding concerns exist for every state from the Carolinas to Maine.

A train of tropical moisture along a frontal boundary continues to batter the East Coast with heavy rain, flooding and gusty winds.

Millions of people are in the path of the storm, and major flood concerns exist for every state from the Carolinas to Maine.

Already, the heavy downpours helped contribute to breaking a rain record set by Hurricane Floyd in Wilmington, North Carolina. The city has seen over 550mm of rain since Sunday.

The Weather Channel’s current threat level, shown below, is high for the system tracking up the East Coast.

Areas outlined in red depict the greatest threat of heavy rain and dangerous flooding through Friday.
