A category 1 Tropical cyclone is on course to hit Tahiti later today, according to the Fiji met service.
A storm warning was issued from the Fijian weather authority in Nadi late last night, when it said the relatively weak tropical cyclone, Niko, was moving southeast towards Tahiti at 9 knots, and intensifying as it went.
Sustained 40 knot winds were expected close to the centre, though these were picked to increase to 60 knots
More detailed information about the cyclone’s path can be found here – and all vessels within 300 nautical miles of the centre were put on alert, and asked to provide reports every 3 hours to RSMC Nadi on their normal channels.
Though a category one is not particularly strong, it was picked to get as high as a category 2 before making landfall, and will still pack a fierce punch for those in its path.
Stay watching here for more details on Niko, we will update as soon as we get new information.
