We’re in for a windy and unsettled week at times this week, as powerful storms churn well south of the country and large highs are mostly offshore, but close enough to bring some large dry areas.
Let’s get into the forecast for Monday to start with…
RAIN:
High pressure is sliding off NZ to the east on Monday, so most of the nation is dry.
WIND:
There’s a breezy easterly flow at the top of the North Island, lighter winds further down the middle part of NZ with nor-easters along the east. But the lower half of the South Island will notice those windier west to north-west winds.
TEMPERATURES:
It may be a cool start for some but the south and east of the South Island warms up further with those westerlies kicking in, most other places warm up to a normal or warmer than normal day for this part of November.
WEEK AND NEXT WEEKEND
On Tuesday another area of high pressure brushes the upper North Island while breezy nor’westers pick up around the middle of the country. A cold front arrives in the south-west corner of the South Island and quickly moves over the country going into Wednesday – and really falls apart over the North Island.
But in it’s wake Wednesday will be a windy, typically spring-like day with showers off the Tasman Sea and wettest weather in the western North Island and across the South Island. As it’s been like for much of spring.
On Thursday the main pulse of cold air heads over the South Island and into the lower North Island. Parts of the South Island may feel a bit wintry with low daytime highs and snow on the mountains. Showers continue for the western North Island and dry westerlies continue for the east.
On Friday that colder air may surge into the eastern North Island with some showers, but it’s worth noting the next 7 days across New Zealand are mostly leaning drier than average with only a few areas getting normal rainfall for this time of year.
High pressure is trying to return to NZ by the weekend… it’s not locked in yet if it will happen. More details in our Monday video.
