Tuesday News: Rain / Showers, where & when – Auckland has summer temps (for now) – Late Nov snow & frost potential

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Here’s what is making the weather headlines today…..

RAIN OR SHOWERS, WHERE AND WHEN

A southeasterly airflow continues to keep the east of the North Island wet today, out west conditions are drier however this afternoon some instability may form again, mainly Waikato through to Northland. A few of these showers may become heavy then easing later on.

The South Island is dry this morning, perhaps Marlborough may have some coastal drizzle first thing. Then this afternoon isolated showers develop about some inland hills and ranges, a few of these may become heavy with thunder. Thunder chances look best about Central Otago.

More on today’s instability chances (thunderstorm chances) from Metservice here.

Wednesday’s instability risk shifts to North Otago through to North Canterbury, mainly inland. South Canterbury in particular (once again, mainly inland) has quite high instability develop late afternoon which could lead to a chance of severe thunderstorms and isolated heavy downpours. Something to keep note of.

TEMPERATURES BECOMING WARMER

Well that is true till at least Thursday, then a cold southwest front moves north and the temperature drops.

Friday in particular will be noticeably colder for much of the country although there are a few caveats, Northland through to Hawkes Bay starts off quite nice before the cold change moves through. The West Coast of the South Island clears up to a reasonable afternoon with temperatures reaching into the late teens.

A LITTLE LATE NOVEMBER SNOW THEN FROST POTENTIAL

Yes the cold front moving north late Thursday into Friday over the country looks to bring some snow to the ranges.

Snow most likely won’t cause issues for most apart from those dealing in high elevations, but after this clears cold morning temperatures may be of concern to growers. On Saturday morning for inland parts of the lower South Island then Sunday morning cold temperatures spread further north. The North Island at this stage looks to escape any frost risk.
