Tuesday’s national forecast – Unstable North Island

A ridge of high pressure still lies over the country today, high humidity air pushes back onto the North Island from the northeast and this leads to unstable showers this afternoon for some. The South Island stays dry but a front brings showers to Fiordland this evening.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Partly cloudy and humid, a few isolated showers. Morning rain for Bay Of Plenty then easing to a few showers. East to northeasterly winds.
Highs: 22-25

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Early mist or fog possible then clearing to mostly sunny weather, becoming humid. Cloud builds in the afternoon with isolated showers developing, one or two may be heavy with thunder, easing evening, clearing at night. Light winds.
Highs: 22-26

Eastern North Island

Partly cloudy skies and quite humid, north of about Napier expect morning rain or showers then easing and dry spells increasing. Further south showers develop in the afternoon, some may become heavy with thunderstorms then clearing at night. Northeasterly winds.
Highs: 23-26

Wellington

Mostly sunny and warm, afternoon clouds about inland ranges with the risk of a late isolated shower. Light north to northeasterly winds.
Highs: 24-27

Marlborough & Nelson

Sunny, some cloud possible later in the day. North to northeasterly winds.
Highs: 22-27

Canterbury

Morning cloud clears then mostly sunny, a touch of high cloud increases from afternoon. Northeasterlies freshen in the afternoon across the plains, easing later in the day.
Highs: 20-26

West Coast

Mainly sunny but expect high cloud for South Westland, spreading northwards in the afternoon, evening showers for Fiordland. North to northeasterly winds.
Highs: 20-25

Southland & Otago
Morning mist of fog possible then partly cloudy skies, northeasterlies tend to the north late afternoon. Coastal Otago has morning cloud break to sunny spells, breezy northeasterly winds ease later in the day.
Highs: 20-27
