Tuesday’s national forecast – Troughs move in

A low in the Tasman Sea pushes a few troughs into the western side of New Zealand today, an occluded front hangs over the upper North Island bringing rain.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Mostly cloudy with occasional showers, one or two may be heavy. Rain for Coromandel in the morning then easing. Northland has a few sunny spells, isolated showers there in the afternoon may be heavy with the low risk of some thunder. Breezy northeasterlies, tending more to the north for Northland.
Highs: 16 – 18

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Cloudy spells with a few spits or showers, some rain for Taranaki from afternoon. Northeasterlies, gusty for coastal Taranaki.
Highs: 12 – 18

Eastern North Island

A mix of sun and cloud, a few spits from late afternoon, mainly south of Napier. Northeasterly winds.
Highs: 16 – 17

Wellington

Mostly cloudy, the odd spit or shower from midday, rain for a time in the evening as northeasterlies tend to the north.
Highs: 15 – 18

Marlborough & Nelson

Showers or spits (after midday for Marlborough), rain for Tasman with heavy falls possible spreading into Nelson around midday then Marlborough late afternoon. Rain eases evening as northeasterlies tend to the north.
Highs: 13 – 14

Canterbury

Partly cloudy, there may be a few morning showers near the coast. Overnight spits or showers for inland areas. East to northeasterly winds.
Highs: 13 – 15

West Coast

Mostly cloudy, showers for Buller spread south around midday, turning to rain by evening, heavy falls later in the day. East to northeasterly winds freshen.
Highs: 15 – 17

Southland & Otago
Mostly sunny for Southland and Central Otago after any morning fog clears, a touch of high cloud. Partly cloudy for coastal Otago. East to northeasterly winds, breezy for coastal Otago.
Highs: 14 – 16
