A cold front moves over the North Island today, winds change southwest in behind, very strong for eastern regions.
Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Sunny areas and increasing cloud, rain in the afternoon as northwesterlies change westerly. Rain eases to showers in the evening, clearing Bay Of Plenty.
Highs: 20-23
Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Morning rain as northwesterlies change westerly (chance of thunder for Taranaki), easing in the afternoon then showers beef up in the evening, some may become heavy with thunder for Taranaki again as southerlies develop.
Highs: 15-21
Eastern North Island
High cloud, scattered rain for Wairarapa. Rain develops further north in the afternoon and may become heavy before easing later on. Northwesterlies change west to southwest in the afternoon, in the evening southwesterlies strengthen along the coast.

Wellington
Rain, clearing late morning then sun breaks through. Late afternoon showers move in as strong northerlies change to the south.

Marlborough & Nelson
Early rain clears then sunny with gusty west to northwesterly winds. Winds change to the south mid afternoon with showers moving in.

Canterbury
Rain (possible heavy) spreads northwards first thing in the morning with strong southwesterlies, gales likely about the coast, severe gales on Banks Peninsula. Rain eases to showers in the evening, clearing inland but remaining about the coast. Winds ease overnight.

West Coast
Showers, chance of an isolated heavy fall with thunder north of Hokitika, clearing Fiordland in the morning then further north in the afternoon as southerlies freshen. Sun breaks through once showers clear.
Highs: 15-19
Southland & Otago
Rain (heavy for Otago) eases to showers in the morning, becoming few in the evening. Gusty southerlies, gales for coastal areas especially coastal Otago, easing later in the day.
