Tuesday’s national forecast – Southwest airflow

A southwesterly airflow continues over the country today, showers for some especially the North Island, drier further south. A cold front moves onto the far south this evening with heavy rain likely for Fiordland.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Partly cloudy with occasional showers, easing in the evening or perhaps clearing. Bay Of Plenty should be dry for much of the day. Southwesterlies may be fresh for the first half of the day then easing a touch.
Highs: 14 – 16


Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Occasional showers, clearing in the evening. Sun breaks through at times from afternoon. Southwesterlies die out later in the day for most but remaining for Taranaki.
Highs: 9 – 15

Eastern North Island
Mostly cloudy, showers for Wairarapa push further north around midday, clearing in the evening. Southwesterlies die out at night.
Highs: 13 – 15


Wellington
Occasional showers, clearing this afternoon then becoming mostly sunny. Southerlies tend to the north in the evening.
Highs: 12 – 13

Marlborough & Nelson
Mostly sunny, any morning cloud clears Marlborough. Southwestelies tend to the east in the afternoon for Marlborough, north for Nelson.
Highs: 12 – 15

Canterbury
Mostly sunny, showers about Banks Peninsula and perhaps the Kaikoura coast clearing in the afternoon. Southwesterlies swing around to the northeast by evening.
Highs: 7 – 13


West Coast
A mix of sun and cloud, cloud thickens from afternoon, there may be a shower. Rain moves into Fiordland evening with heavy falls, pushing northwards overnight. Southwesterlies tend northerly later in the day.
Highs: 11 – 14


Southland & Otago
A mix of sun and cloud, light winds tend north to northeast in the afternoon. Cloud thickens in the evening then later on some rain spreads into the Lakes District off the western ranges.
Highs: 7 – 12
