Tuesday’s national forecast – Rip snorter cold change

A blustery cold southwest change pushes northwards over the South Island today, reaching the lower North Island around midnight. There may be thunderstorms and hail with this change as it moves through.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Partly cloudy with occasional showers, especially in the west. Bay Of Plenty has a mainly dry day but could get a shower in the afternoon pass over from the west. Southwesterlies strengthen.
Highs: 14 – 16

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Occasional showers with westerly winds, strengthening later. Overnight showers become heavy with a chance of hail and thunder as winds change to the south, snow to 700m.
Highs: 9 – 15

Eastern North Island

A mix of sun and cloud, a few spits or showers south of Napier, winds from the west. A strong southwest change moves northwards overnight bringing rain into Wairarapa then moving further north.
Highs: 14 – 17

Wellington

Partly cloudy, chance of a shower. Rain later in the evening with a strong to gale southerly change. A chance of thunder and hail with the change.
Highs: 13 – 14

Marlborough & Nelson

Sunny, showers later in the evening (mainly for Marlborough) with a blustery southwest change, clearing overnight.
Highs: 15 – 16

Canterbury

Sunny, a blustery southwest change moves northwards late afternoon bringing heavy showers, there may even be hail and thunder then clearing at night. Snow falls to 600m.
Highs: 11 – 13

West Coast
A few showers, rain, possibly heavy with hail and thunder about Fiordland spreads northwards during the afternoon as southwesterlies freshen. Conditions start drying up overnight from the south. Snow may lower to about 600m before clearing at night.
Highs: 10 – 13

Southland & Otago
Dry at first then rain late morning for Southland, easing to showers in the afternoon. Showers around midday for Otago as northwesterlies change fresh southwest (strong about the coast). Conditions may dry up in the evening for parts of Otago especially in the north. Snow flurries to 300m later in the day.
Highs: 10 – 12
