Tuesday’s national forecast – Rain moves into the North Island

A few fronts head towards the North Island today from the Tasman Sea bringing rain from this afternoon in the west. The South Island as a northwesterly airflow, a cold front moves onto the far south this evening.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Cloudy or becoming cloudy in the morning, a few light showers possible otherwise mainly dry. In the afternoon rain spreads in from the Tasman Sea with a few heavy falls later in the evening and overnight for a time. Northerly winds, strong later in the day.
Highs: 14-17

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Mostly cloudy, Kapiti and Taranaki may have the odd shower, widespread rain moves in during the afternoon with a chance of heavy falls from evening. North to northwesterly winds freshen, become strong about the coast late afternoon or evening, gales may even develop for a time about coastal Taranaki. Winds change to the south overnight.
Highs: 10-16

Eastern North Island

High cloud, late afternoon or evening scattered rain starts to spread from the west. Rain becomes more persistent overnight as northerlies change to the south.
Highs: 14-16

Wellington

Mostly cloudy, the odd shower develops around midday then turns to rain later in the afternoon, easing overnight as gusty northerlies change to the south.
Highs: 13-14

Marlborough & Nelson

High cloud, rain moves in during the afternoon, clearing overnight as northwesterlies change to the south. Rain may become heavy for a time in the evening, mainly about Golden Bay and the Sounds.
Highs: 11-13

Canterbury

High cloud, there may be some rain for northern parts of North Canterbury in the evening then clearing overnight. Light northerlies.
Highs: 7-13

West Coast

Mostly cloudy, showers for South Westland. Showers move in Greymouth northwards around midday, turning to rain north of Wesport during the afternoon, clearing at night. Light winds change to the south later in the day.
Highs: 8-13

Southland & Otago
A mix of sun and cloud for Southland, late afternoon or evening showers as breezy northwesterlies change southwest. Otago has sunnier weather with northwesterly winds, some cloud about the Lakes District with the odd spit spreading from the west. In the evening winds change southwest bringing a few showers, mainly for southern parts of the region.
