Tuesday’s national forecast: Ex-Cyclone Hale moves closer

Ex-Tropical Cyclone Hale moves close by the North Island today bringing some heavy rain and strong winds, a ridge over the South Island continues to bring weather that is more settled however afternoon showers develop about inland parts of the far south.

North Island

Cloudy for all with spits or showers, rain in the east for Hawkes Bay up through to East Cape and north of Coromandel / Auckland with heavy falls. Rain becomes more widespread north of Hawkes Bay across to southern Waikato with heavy falls for some late afternoon or evening, rain eases later in the day for Northland. Winds from the southeast strong East Cape across to Northland with gales about eastern coast areas, strong southeasterlies spread further southwards in the evening.

South Island

Some high cloud, lower level cloud in the east breaks away in the morning then moves in again at night. Nelson and Marlborough may have a bit of a cloudy day. Afternoon cloud builds inland about hills and ranges, isolated showers develop late afternoon / evening for the ranges of South Westland and western Otago, showers may become heavy with thunder. Winds generally light then tending onshore in the afternoon, east to northeast winds along the east coast freshen up in the afternoon.
