Various fronts bring rain to the South Island today with heavy falls, heavy snow at high altitudes. Northerly quarter winds for the North Island with some instability this afternoon for Auckland and Waikato.
Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Morning cloud breaks to sunny spells, one or two showers for western Waikato and eastern Bay Of Plenty. During the afternoon isolated showers develop for Auckland and south of there (mainly inland hills / ranges), some may be heavy for Waikato with thunder then easing later on. Northerly winds.
Highs: 19 – 21
Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Mostly cloudy with showers, mainly for Taranaki and Kapiti. Showers becoming a bit more widespread into the afternoon then expect evening rain (southern Taranaki across to southern Manawatu, rain heavy for Kapiti). North to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 16 – 21
Eastern North Island
Mostly sunny and warm with some high cloud, showers (a few may be heavy) spread into Wairarapa from mid afternoon as northerlies change to the south, staying dry further north.
Highs: 20 – 24
Wellington
A few spits, strong north to northwesterly winds (gales through Cook Strait). Rain develops in the afternoon as winds change to the south, rain becoming heavy for a time then easing overnight.
Highs: 16 – 17
Marlborough & Nelson
Rain with heavy falls for Nelson, heavy falls spread into Marlborough late afternoon as northerlies change to the south. Rain eases overnight.
Highs: 16 – 19
Canterbury
Rain with heavy falls inland, easing afternoon from the south, showers clear in the evening with south to southwesterly winds dying away. Snow down to 700m may be heavy, perhaps even a touch lower for a time.
Highs: 9 – 14
West Coast
Sunny areas increase for Fiordland after early showers clear, further north expect heavy rain to clear from the south as northerlies change around to the south. Rain finally hangs around for Buller overnight.
Highs: 13 – 16
Southland & Otago
Showers, morning rain for Otago eases. Showers clear Southland in the afternoon then Otago in the evening. Once showers clear sun may start to break through, mainly for Southland. Snow flurries to 600m. South to southwesterly winds die out later in the day.
