Tuesday’s national forecast – Heavy rain moves in from the west

A series of fronts move in from the west and southwest today, plenty of wet weather today with heavy falls in the west and for the upper North Island. Drier in the east this morning but rain starts to spread from the west afternoon on wards.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Showers, heavy rain moves into Northland around midday, Auckland in the afternoon then Bay Of Plenty by evening as gusty northeasterlies tend to the north. Rain may be torrential for a time. Thunderstorms possible for Northland in the afternoon then Bay Of Plenty overnight.
Highs: 19-21

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Cloudy, rain develops for Taranaki in the morning then elsewhere from afternoon. Rain from afternoon is heavy for Taranaki, Kapiti and parts of the Central North Island. From evening rain starts to ease but there could be an isolated heavy shower for Taranaki with thunder. Northeasterlies, gusty for coastal Taranaki.

Eastern North Island

High cloud, rain spreads into Wairarapa from afternoon then further north in the evening. Rain north of Napier in the evening may be heavy before easing overnight. Breezy northeasterlies.
Highs: 21-22

Wellington

Cloudy, rain develops around midday, possibly heavy for a time in the afternoon, easing evening. Gusty northerlies.
Highs: 19-22

Marlborough & Nelson

Rain, heavy for Tasman and Nelson, becoming heavy by midday for Marlborough, easing in the evening to showers, could be some thunder. Gusty northerlies easing late afternoon or evening.
Highs: 17-19

Canterbury

High cloud, a few spots of rain possible, rain in the high country eases from afternoon. Showers for South Canterbury from evening then further north overnight as northeasterlies change southwest.
Highs: 18-21

West Coast

Heavy rain, showers and possible thunderstorms from afternoon as gusty northeasterlies ease.
Highs: 16-18

Southland & Otago
Showers then rain from afternoon for Southland as light winds tend southwest. Otago has a dry morning, showers from afternoon as southwesterlies move in, rain later in the evening or overnight. Some snow overnight above 800m.
Highs: 14-19
