Tuesday’s national forecast – EX TC Gabrielle tracks east

Ex tropical cyclone Gabrielle tracks eastwards today, very strong south to southwesterly winds in the west from Wellington up to Northland. A warm front pushes down onto the northeastern corner of the South Island bringing heavy rain there.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Rain, easing to showers in the afternoon. Heavy rain for Northland and Bay Of Plenty easing back from afternoon also. Southwesterly winds with gales likely for Auckland and Northland, severe gales in the west. Bay Of Plenty sees easterly winds, tending southwest in the afternoon.
Highs: 19-24

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Heavy morning rain then easing to showers from afternoon, strong southerly winds with gales about the coast, perhaps severe gale then easing later in the day.
Highs: 18-23

Eastern North Island

Very heavy rain in the morning then easing, there may be thunderstorms and downpours for the rest of the day till evening then starting to ease back overnight. Gale east to southeast winds at first then easing, winds tend southwest later in the day.
Highs: 22-23

Wellington

Rain, becoming heavy in the morning then easing back from late afternoon or evening. Gale southerly winds, severe gales through Cook Strait.
Highs: 16-21

Marlborough & Nelson

Rain becomes heavy in the morning for Marlborough, easing evening. Nelson has some scattered rain develop in the morning, perhaps more persistent for a time around midday then easing, clearing later in the evening. Southerly winds, strong for Marlborough with gales about the coast, severe gales about the outer Sounds.
Highs: 18-24

Canterbury

Cloudy with showers south of Banks Peninsula, winds from the east. North of Banks Peninsula expect rain with winds more from the south. Expect heavy rain about the Kaikoura area. From evening rain spreads south of Banks Peninsula with winds tending southwest and freshening.
Highs: 17-20

West Coast

High cloud, Buller has a few spits of rain or showers. Fiordland is sunnier but there may be afternoon isolated showers. Southeasterly winds.
Highs: 21-24

Southland & Otago
Morning cloud possible then mostly sunny, some high cloud spreads down from the north. Coastal Otago may be a little cloudier with the odd shower north of Otago Peninsula. East to northeasterly winds, fresh about the coast.
Highs: 20-26
