Tuesday’s national forecast – Front moves in to far south

A cold front moves onto the lower South Island around midday today, gradually moving northwards this evening and overnight. Some welcome rain will push into southern and eastern regions. The North Island is mainly settled today, brisk northerlies through Cook Strait.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Fog or low cloud possible morning and night, mostly sunny otherwise with light winds then afternoon sea breezes.
Highs: 23-26

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Morning mist or fog possible, mainly inland then expect a mix of sun and cloud with the chance of a shower or two. North to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 22-24

Eastern North Island
Sunny with northerly winds, tending more northeast in the afternoon. Afternoon northwesterlies for Wairarapa.
Highs: 24-26

Wellington

Partly cloudy with the odd spit or shower, mainly in the north up the Hutt Valley. Breezy northerlies.
Highs: 22-24

Marlborough & Nelson

Sunny and hot, afternoon northerlies for Nelson, afternoon northeasterlies for Marlborough.
Highs: 26-29

Canterbury

Mostly sunny with northeasterlies near the coast, northwesterlies inland and warm temperatures if not a bit hot, rain moves into South Canterbury in the evening then North Canterbury overnight as southerlies freshen.
Highs: 25-30

West Coast

Partly cloudy with the odd shower, rain moves into Fiordland around midday, reaching North Westland later in the evening or overnight. Light winds tend to the west.
Highs: 21-26

Southland & Otago
Dry to start with some sun then rain develops around midday for Southland, Otago late afternoon with a south to southwest change. Rain may be heavy in the evening, easing overnight for Southland, in the morning on Wednesday for Otago.
Highs: 19-29
