Tuesday’s national forecast – Break in the weather

A break in the weather today with a ridge of high pressure for the North Island, further south a northerly airflow builds with a front bringing rain to the West Coast overnight.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Any morning cloud clears (a few morning showers clear BOP) then mostly sunny with southwesterly winds.
Highs: 22-24

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Any morning cloud clears then mostly sunny, northwesterly winds.
Highs: 18-20

Eastern North Island

Some morning cloud and any showers clear then mostly sunny from afternoon. Light winds tend onshore in the afternoon.
Highs: 22-23

Wellington

A mix of sun and cloud, northerly winds strengthen, gales through Cook Strait in the evening.
Highs: 17-19

Marlborough & Nelson

Sunny with evening high cloud, morning southwesterlies for Nelson. North to northwesterly winds becoming gusty from afternoon (more so from Marlborough).
Highs: 19-23

Canterbury

Mostly sunny with some high cloud from late afternoon or evening, northerly winds, northeasterlies nearer the coast from afternoon.
Highs: 19-22

West Coast

Partly cloudy, a light shower or two with northeasterly winds. Cloud thickens later in the day with rain moving in late evening for South Westland then pushing northwards overnight. Northeasterlies strengthen later in the day.
Highs: 17-21

Southland & Otago
Mostly sunny with high cloud thickening from midday, northerly winds, tending more northeast about coastal Otago.
Highs: 20-23
