An east to northeasterly airflow lies over New Zealand today, generally the weather is settled however afternoon and evening isolated showers get going about the upper and lower South Island, also inland North Island areas. Showers could turn thundery for the North Island and lower South Island.

Northland
Cloudy spells with east to northeast breezes, the odd shower at times clears around midnight.
High: 21

Auckland
Sunny spells with east to northeast breezes, chance of a late afternoon isolated shower.
High: 22

Central North Island, Bay Of Plenty, Waikato
Cloudy spells about the Bay Of Plenty with easterly breezes, the odd shower from afternoon. Sunny spells elsewhere however a few isolated showers develop late afternoon and evening especially in the west of Waikato and the Central North Island. Showers could turn heavy and thundery then clearing by midnight.

Eastern North Island
Morning cloud and the risk of some drizzle then afternoon sunny spells, morning southerlies then afternoon easterly breezes. Afternoon and evening a few isolated showers develop about the ranges of Gisborne and northern Hawkes Bay bringing the odd heavy fall and risk of a thunderstorm.
Highs: 19-20

Western North Island
Mostly sunny with southeasterly breezes. Late afternoon and evening isolated showers develop about inland Taranaki and northern Manawatu, these showers could turn heavy and thundery then clearing by midnight.
Highs: 20-22

Wellington
Sunny spells with southerly breezes, morning cloud breaks away.
Highs: 18-19

Nelson
Mostly sunny with light winds and afternoon northerlies after any early cloud clears. A few late afternoon and evening isolated showers may develop inland then clearing by midnight.
Highs: 19-21

Marlborough
Early cloud with the chance of a drizzle patch then becoming mostly sunny with light winds tending easterly in the afternoon near the coast. A few late afternoon and evening isolated showers inland then clearing before midnight.
Highs: 19-21

Canterbury
A cloudy start with the chance of a drizzle patch near the coast, afternoon sunny spells with east to northeast breezes. There may be an isolated shower or two about the foothills late afternoon and evening.
Highs: 18-20

West Coast
Mostly sunny after any morning cloud clears, light winds and afternoon sea breezes. A few isolated showers are possible late afternoon and evening about Buller.
Highs: 21-22

Coastal Otago
Morning cloud breaks to sunny spells in the afternoon. Easterly breezes, brisk in the afternoon.
High: 17

Southland & Central Otago
Mostly sunny after any morning cloud clears, light winds tend southerly in the afternoon. Chance of a late afternoon isolated shower about inland Southland and Central Otago, a low risk of a thunderstorm about inland Southland too.
Highs: 17-24

Hi, I am looking out from Thames – south ,west , and north there is so much haze ( which looks like smoke its so thick, and even reddish tinged) is this a weather phenomena or is there some huge fires about the peninsular not being reported on?
