A low pressure system moves southeast across central New Zealand today, with it comes rain which will be heavy for a time about Nelson, Marlborough and in particular North Canterbury plus the Kaikoura area. Southland, Otago, Hawkes Bay and Gisborne will remain mostly dry, about the lower North Island in the west rain is expected. Cloudy with a few showers moving through for the upper North Island.

Upper North Island

Mostly cloudy today with the odd shower mainly this morning with northwest breezes, winds tend more westerly after midday at which point a few sunny areas may break through. About eastern Bay Of Plenty expect showers to hang about for most of the day. In Gisborne expect dry weather with high cloud and northwesterlies. Another period of showers moves through about and south of Auckland overnight or towards dawn on Wednesday.
HIGHS: 22-23, high 20’s in Gisborne

Lower North Island

Northerly breezes with cloudy skies, expect rain or showers at times particularly about Taranaki, the CNI, Kapiti and Wellington. Winds change southwest overnight with slightly more widespread rain. Hawkes Bay and northern Wairarapa look to remain mostly dry today with high cloud and northwest breezes, a few showers may pass through southern Wairarapa late afternoon or evening.
HIGHS: 19-20 in the West, 26-28 in the east

Upper South Island

Rain for most with east to southeast breezes, rain clears on the West Coast in the afternoon. Rain heavy at times about Nelson and Marlborough in the morning then easing later in the afternoon and clearing overnight. Rain becoming quite heavy about the hills and ranges of North Canterbury and the Kaikoura area later this morning with winds tending more southerly. Rain eases to showers overnight.
HIGHS: 17-18 on the West Coast. 19 for Nelson, 16-18 in Canterbury and Marlborough

Lower South Island

Chance of a morning shower then mostly dry with southeasterly breezes. Mostly cloudy about eastern Otago however there may be sunny breaks inland. The odd drizzle patch may return about eastern areas in the afternoon for a time. On the West Coast south of the Glaciers expect mostly sunny areas with light winds, breezy southwesterlies just offshore however. Some high cloud about South Westland.
HIGHS: 16-19, lows 20’s about Milford and perhaps South Westland.
