Tuesday’s national forecast – Very hot in the east (+4 Maps)

A weak area of high pressure centred to the northwest of the North Island in the Tasman Sea pushes a very hot westerly quarter airflow over New Zealand today.

Most of New Zealand is dry today, there could be a touch of morning drizzle about the southwestern corner of the North Island and Fiordland also sees drizzle at times.

Temperatures will be hot for many especially in the east, the West Coast south of about Hokitika sees the coolest day time highs.

Winds are moderate for most in speed however through the Southern Alps, Cook Strait plus coastal parts of the lower South Island winds may be gusty or strong at times.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Morning cloud then afternoon sunny spells, cloud may be persistent during the day about western coastal parts. Bay Of Plenty has a sunny day. Southwesterly winds.
Highs: 24-31

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Morning cloud, may be a drizzle patch then sunny areas increase in the afternoon. West to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 23-26

Eastern North Island

Sunny, afternoon east to northeast winds. Northwesterlies for Wairarapa.
Highs: 26-31

Wellington

Some morning cloud then mostly sunny, breezy northerlies.
High: 22

Marlborough & Nelson

Sunny and hot with northerly winds.
Highs: 26-33

Canterbury

A sunny and hot day with north to northwesterly winds. Winds could tend northeast at times about Christchurch bringing back temperatures a touch, mainly morning.
Highs: 29-37

West Coast

Mostly sunny north of the Glaciers, cloudier skies further south with light showers or drizzle at times for Fiordland. A hot afternoon about inland Buller. Northwesterly winds.
Highs: 19-30

Southland & Otago
A mix of high cloud and areas of sun. Northwesterly winds, breezy at times from afternoon. Winds may become strong from afternoon about coastal Southland.
Highs: 26-32
