A strong cold southwesterly airflow lies over New Zealand today.

North Island

Showers for the upper / western North Island today with brisk to strong southwesterly winds, possibly gusting to gale about some coastal areas then easing later this evening. Showers along the east coast clear in the evening, cool southwesterlies. Showers heavy this morning with hail about Wairarapa then easing.

South Island

Morning rain / hail about Buller eases to the odd shower, mostly sunny for South Westland. Morning rain clears Nelson then becoming mostly sunny. Sunny spells for Marlborough and Canterbury, mainly dry but expect showers out on Banks Peninsula which mostly clear in the evening. Southwesterlies will be strong about the coast. Showers for Southland and Otago gradually ease from afternoon, some snow to 400m. Cold southwesterlies.

Temperatures

Highs in the mid teens for much of the North Island, getting into the high teens Auckland northwards. Low double figures about the Central Plateau. Highs in the low to mid teens about Canterbury, Marlborough, Nelson and North Westland. Highs range from 7 to 11 degrees about Southland / Otago.
